July 2005
Above aerial photo was taken on June 16th, 2005 showing the Springfield Interchange Project looking northeast. Work is ongoing in several areas during the final two phases of the project. On the left, work continues on the new flyover bridge from I-395 south to I-495E/95N, beltway outer loop, towards Baltimore. When opened, I-395 south motorists heading to the outer loop will no longer need to drive south and catch the old clover leaf ramp to the outer loop. On the right are the new piers for the flyover bridge that will take motorists from the I-95 South, (south of Springfield) directly over the mixing bowl and onto the outer loop towards the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The current I-95N/I-495 East ramp will remain open for local Springfield/Franconia Road motorists heading to the outer loop. Notice the work completed to date on this bridge just above the baseball fields where concrete has already been poured in this section. During the summer, steel will be hung connecting the piers, followed by concrete and connection to the finished section of the bridge. Also, while difficult to see on this photo, on the far left, work is continuing on the new bridges that will provide I-495 West motorists and I-395 South motorists their own bridge taking them directly onto I-95 South on the right for Exit 169B/A for Route 644, Springfield/Franconia.
I-95N, looking northwest. In the forefront note the abutment and piers for the new I-95N bridge taking motorists from south of Springfield over the mixing bowl directly onto the Beltway's outer loop, I-495E/I-95N towards Baltimore.
Beltway outer loop looking west, from Tysons Corner east. I-95S bridge from inner loop rising above the outer loop. Note at bottom center work completed on the beltway portion of the new I-95N bridge to I-495E/I-95N. Also note the other bridge, under construction, coming around from I-395S heading also for the outer loop.
Aerial of the mixing bowl under construction looking southwest. Note how the new I-95N bridge to the outer loop comes over the beltway and down onto the outer loop. Note also how the new I-395S bridge to the outer loop comes around over the outer loop, under the bridge from the inner loop to I-95S and on to the outer loop.
Panoramic view the Springfield Interchange Project core work area where I-95/395/495 converge. In this photo, looking south you can see on-going work in the final two phase, 6-7 of the project along with early project work, 1999-2002, in the Springfield area where I-95S meets Old Keene Mill and Franconia Roads, Route 644. The new work on the right side is the new I-395S bridge to the Beltway outer look towards the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
Springfield Interchange Project over the mixing bowl looking east with I-495E/I-95N, towards the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and Baltimore. The inner loop appears on the right side. In the background is the inner loop bridge to I-95S that opened in May of 2003. In the near ground is ongoing work on the two new bridges that will connect I-395S motorists and I-495E motorists who are heading to Springfield to hit Old Keene Mill Road/Franconia Roads, Route 644. In the middle, is the new bridge from I-395S to the outer loop east towards Baltimore.
