I-95 Benefits
I-95 north to I-495
One of the biggest bottlenecks in the interchange was where I-95 north traffic shuffles to reach the I-495 east (to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge) and west (to the American Legion Bridge) exits. The new interchange relieves this situation.
Long before motorists reach the Beltway, they see signs for I-395 north, I-495 east and I-495 west and have plenty of time to pick a lane. As cars travel north, the lanes divide, making it feel like motorists are on their own two to four lane highway. This prevents the last-minute weaving of traffic at the exit ramps. Traffic on I-95 north heading to I-495 west has two lanes, traffic heading to I-495 east also has two lanes. Traffic continuing north to I-395 has three lanes.
That's not all. Traffic coming from the Springfield area has an additional three lanes from which it can access I-495. The HOV lanes remain as well. In total, there are 12 lanes of traffic heading north in the morning at the interchange's widest point.
